ROYAL Mail rival TNT is targeting smaller companies in Hampshire for the first time, just as the traditional postal service is beset by strike threats.
The Dutch firm, one of the biggest players in the UK's post market since liberalisation in 2006, already has 70 large customers in the region generating up to 15 million items a day Now bosses are turning their attention to smaller fry by offering to handle post from firms with 250 items a day.
They are aiming to persuade firms from the county's finance, public sector and retail sectors who have up until now been below their threshold to make the switch.
Around 50 businesses are being courted at a seminar in Southamp-ton's Hilton Hotel on Thursday.
The move comes as unions unveiled plans for more damaging strikes at the Royal Mail in October in a row over pay and staff cut backs.
Trevor Murphy, managing director of TNT Post South West, said: "The deregulation of the mail postal market last year is not only good news for large national mailers but also for small to medium sized local businesses. Southampton businesses now have a choice and that choice is TNT Post."
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail will continue to fight for every letter as we strive to modernise the business."

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

it's not just the delivering we do we process there mail on our machines transport it in our vans sort out there cock ups and all for a pitence?
Why have Royal Mail DSA so easy for our competitors.
They should at least have to take all there mail to each individual delivery office every day and re-distribute there own missorts
This would soon put a stop to Dsa and have customers come crying back to Royal Mail.
