The Great Mail Robbery

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2007) -

Unite union, representing 12,000 Royal Mail managers will warn Royal Mail that it could face strike action over pensions.

Royal Mail is close to formally tabling its proposals for pensions reform. In a letter sent to the union's senior representatives from Unite, the union describes one of the possible proposals as " the great mail robbery". It has been estimated that Royal Mail could reap £ 1.5bn from just one of the proposed changes.

Unite will meet with Royal Mail on Moday 24th September to discuss Royal Mail's proposals to change the scheme. The union anticipates that during next week Royal Mail will inform employee's of the changes to their pension scheme.

One of the expected proposals is to 'bank" the current benefits, which could cost the members of the scheme up to £ 1.5 billion. That's £ 1.5 billion that would have been paid out in the future to members and their dependants.

The union believes the proposals could include;

- Closing the scheme to new employees.
- Raising the normal retirement age to 65 in 2010.
- From 1 April 2008 replace the current final salary pension schemes with career average schemes.
- "Banking" current benefits (past service benefits) and indexing them to RPI or 5%.

Unite National Officer, Paul Reuter says,

"We call upon Royal Mail to honour their commitment to preserve the past service benefits that have been built up and paid for by our members.

We also call upon Adam Crozier to honour his commitment given on 7 February 2007 to safeguard the final salary schemes going forward."

"Failure by Royal Mail to respond positively will leave Unite with no option other than to ballot its' members for strike action."

about time them idiots woke up, but the real point is what questions are being asked,
1. when rm took thier pension break did they also take a break from putting our contributions in to the fund?
2.why did it take so long for the people who worked out how much the pension fund was over funded to realise that it was 6.6bn in deficit?
3.who is going to take responsibility for it.
we need answers to these questions and we need then NOW. :lfo :cfo

Surley its the last two governments who are accountable for screwing us over with the pension.
Its the Governments who have bled the money from RM.
Its the governments who happily took the contributions they should have made ie OUR MONEY.
They should be made to be accountable and deal with these issues. This current government encouraged everyone to make their own provisions for those later years. Do the responsible thing by saving for your retirement.
Now they have just taken our money, left us all high and dry and the worse thing is DONT APPEAR TO WANT TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

I totally agree! heads should roll over this. Imagine they want Postmen to work another 5 years in such a physically demanding job, and the job is getting harder by the day. We are not sitting down at a desk all day like some of those w--kers. Why can't the union take them to court, or make the government pay back what they should have payed for 17 years!

What I would like to know is what responsibility the Trustees have for all this pension fiasco? I thought it was their role to safeguard our pensions and act independently from Royal Mail.If not just what do they do? Are they like the rest of them-getting money under false pretenses? Surely the name "Trustees" implies just that and Royal Mail can't just alter the pension scheme without their say so,or do they just rubber stamp what Royal Mail say.The "trustees" should have known years ago there would be a pension defecit but did nothing,it's THEIR fault we're in this mess including the Union nominated trustees.

i totally agree with you that is why i believe that the government are up to their necks in it, if you listened to browns speech today he stated that he was trying to get pensions based on lifetime earnings.so you see he is trying to get out of final salary pensions in fact he encourages you to provide for your own pension. so much for the party for the people!

If we were a private company legal procedings would have been taken long ago and the prss coverage would have been emence, but as we are predomitably goverment owened everything is hushed up , heads would have rolled by now but now we are being asked to put back what we have already put in.Inever asked for a pension break and I sure as hell could have put my contributions to better use than what has been done. As far as I am concerned it is down to messers L & C plus the goverment who should put all of this money back, as Mr Crozier stated in the Mirror some of this money was used to top up the dum's bonuses
