'New methods will take time to bed in and we're sincerely sorry for any delays'

Royal Mail spokesman Sally Hopkins said: "We have recently introduced new delivery methods in Sevenoaks over the summer. These changes are part of Royal Mail's £2 billion investment to modernise the business.

"This is one of the biggest transformations being undertaken in UK industry and is essential in enabling us to respond to a changing mailbag as we deliver fewer letters but more packets and parcels for our customers.

"We inform customers as we introduce these changes nationwide, and to date we have written to over 10 million households.

"When any such major change is implemented, some disruption is possible while changes bed in.

"We sincerely apologise for this and we have measures in place to minimise any disruption and to enable us to deliver the high quality of service customers expect and deserve.

"In the meantime, we would urge any customer who has a query about our service to call Royal Mail customer services on 08457 740 740.

"These changes do not involve a straightforward switch to vans for those postmen and women who have previously used bicycles."

Sally perfectly demonstrates how to say, 'you're gonna have to lump it, chumps', in a polite, more acceptable, form of hogwash. :cuppa

Anger at Royal Mail as Sevenoaks post service is far from first-class

http://www.thisiskent.co.uk/Anger-Royal ... story.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

SENNOCKIANS are angry that their postal service is anything but first-class. Residents and businesses have been affected by delayed mail for some weeks.

Professor Ron Denney, 76, who lives in the aptly named Letter Box Lane, Sevenoaks, has been struggling to run his two businesses since the delays began a month ago.

He said: "I run a small publishing company and a forensic science business from my house and so I often send and receive urgent mail, from police and solicitors, important letters. I rely on post coming on time every day.

"I get no post delivered at all some days and then a huge pile arrives at one time. Or sometimes I can get two or three separate deliveries in one day.

"It's quite obvious they are letting it build up over a few days.

"A postman told me that postmen have given up their bicycles and they are now driving around in vans in pairs and drop each other off and pick each other up at the end of their round."

Mr Denney says he thinks the standard of the recent service is unacceptable.

He said: "I think it is a complete shambles. This has been happening throughout the last month.

"We used to have a dedicated postman but now they are being moved around all the time. People do not get to know their postman and we get poor delivery."

Alan Springett, of Sevenoaks, has been experiencing similar problems.

He said: "Royal Mail's system for deliveries was changed some weeks ago and householders were asked to bear with any temporary disruption.

"However, we have found that some days we receive no delivery at all in our road and when we do it is often late in the afternoon, 4pm or later, and occasionally deliveries are made by persons not in uniform and from what looks like their own private car.

"We are now also finding that parcel deliveries are much-delayed due to a backlog at the sorting office.

"We believe some parcels addressed to us may have been undelivered for two weeks or more. My understanding is that they are going to work on Sunday to try to reduce the backlog."

Elizabeth Holdak, of Cramptons Road, said: "I had to take a letter to a house in Otford Road and someone from Otford Road delivered a parcel for me that had been delivered to them.

"One time I even had a parcel pushed through my window. I made a complaint about that."

Cliff Brookes, a Sevenoaks postal worker and representative for the Communication Workers' Union, told the Chronicle that the "massive modernisation" of Royal Mail was the reason.

He said: "There are huge changes going on. We've got a few casuals working for us at the moment because the staff level is quite low. People have been drafted in who don't know the area.

"Hopefully, everything will be back to normal very soon and people will get the service they need and deserve."

Bound to happen when you have too few staff, too much workload.
Will the penny ever drop, where our senior management buffoons are concerned? :cuppa

The penny will only drop when we all stop doing OT, once that happens then the whole rotten building will collapse but until then, RM will continue to crawl along, just fire fighting.
