THIEVES smashed their way into a Fenland post office in the early hours of today - but were frightened off by the alarm.

Police were alerted to an attempted burglary at Chatteris Post Office, in High Street, at about 3.45am by the alarm sounding.

Offenders smashed the front door to enter the shop, however by the time officers arrived they had fled without stealing anything from inside.

The post office is this morning cordoned off while investigations are carried out.

The attempted burglary comes 48 hours after thieves smashed their way into the Working Men’s Club, in Station Street. Offenders smashed their way through a door between 1.15am and 2.10am on Sunday but nothing was stolen. The alarm also sounded.

Police are appealing for witnesses to both break-ins to come forward. House-to-house inquiries have already been carried out in connection with the incident at the Working Men’s Club.
