Council to protest at closure of mail centre

Vigorous protest is needed against plans to close Shrewsbury sorting office, Knighton Town Council has been urged by one of its members this week.

Councillor Trevor Johnson agreed with the council writing to the Post Office about Shrewsbury and Knighton’s offices, but he said they should also go further.

“We should mount a real protest and let the Government know that the post office is playing tricks with us. We are losing so many things from our town and area, let’s put a vociferous protest together,” he urged.

Councillor Shauna Davies said she had been approached by someone concerned about the potential closure of the Shrewsbury sorting office as it may mean post would be dealt with at Chester, Wolverhampton or South Wales and if it goes ahead Knighton residents would not receive their post before 11am.

She said that while the Government was talking about cutting travelling for environmental reasons, services were being taken further away. Councillor Davies said they should ask the Chamber of Trade and Powys County Council to get involved, and Councillor Roger Bright suggested they write to the MP and AM to get their support.

Members agreed that the clerk should write to all parties to try to gain their support to protest at the possible closure of the sorting office.

Don't hold out much hope when they can't even tell the difference between RM & the PO
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

The Council will close anything over the heads of everybody if it suits their purpose to do so.

Remote areas like around Knighton might be complaining now about the prospect of being served by a more distant Mail Centre but that's nothing to the changes they will see in a few years once privatisatation kicks in.

What makes me laugh is they say alot and do nothing. Just make RM life as hard as possible when they ask for planning permission but they won't

Seems a very strange arguement for the council to adopt. There is no proposal to close the office, collections, deliveries & Network will remain. How many of these councils have jumped on the DSA bandwagon but don't like the nasty pill that follows when changes have to be made?
The Post Office is no longer part of Royal Mail Group so let's hope they send their letter to the correct address.

I hope no-one forwards the letter as an unofficial redirection
