A MUCH-loved and respected national Postman of the Year from South Shields has died at the age of 66.

Terry Greenwell was a postie in his home town for 42 years, serving the Bents Park area for most of his career.

The father-of-three, who retired six years ago, passed away last Monday after a short battle with cancer.

His popularity was rewarded when he was nominated for the national title by his grateful customers in 1996 – and went on to walk off with the crown.

Former workmates at the Royal Mail in South Shields raised £200 in Mr Greenwell’s memory and presented the cash to Tony ‘The Fridge’ Morrison on the Great North Run finishing line in South Shields.

The cash will go towards the Bobby Robson Foundation.

Today. Steven Carr, manager of the Royal Mail at South Shields, paid tribute to his former workmate.

He said: “His award of Postman of the Year was for his dedication and hard work serving the people of South Shields.

“Having being retired for six years, he could still recall the names and addresses of other patients who had lived on his delivery route while he was being treated at South Tyneside District Hospital.

“He leaves three sons – Anthony, Stephen and Ian.

“His wife, Margaret, died a few years ago. Anthony has followed in his father’s footsteps, and is serving the people of South Shields as a postman.

“Terry was a lifelong Newcastle fan, and his family has asked that any monies raised be donated to the Bobby Robson Foundation.”

Mr Greenwell’s funeral service is to be staged on Friday from 1.15pm at Harton Cemetery.

Tony the Fridge – who is completing 30 half-marathons in 30 days in aid of the Foundation – dedicated his run on Saturday in memory of Mr Greenwell.
