NHS Pensions deal signed off
(21/09/07) The changes to the NHS Pension Scheme have now been agreed for England and Wales.
The agreement concludes four years of partnership working between NHS Employers and the NHS trade unions. It delivers a scheme that meets the needs of a modern NHS and its staff, and is sustainable in the longer term.
Existing staff, and those joining the scheme up to 31 March 2008, will keep their normal pension age of 60 (or 55 for some staff who joined before 1995).
Major changes include the introduction of a new scheme for new staff with a normal pension age of 65. The minimum age for drawing a reduced pension will also increase from 50 to 55 for new entrants. Other changes include:
* Earnings-related, tiered contributions so that higher paid staff pay more fairly for the benefits they draw
* Cost-sharing arrangements between employers and staff to limit the cost of the scheme and contain long-term costs to the NHS
* Survivor benefits for all nominated partners - not just spouses and civil partners. These benefits will now be payable for life
* A new purchase facility for members who wish to increase their benefits
* New step-down arrangements so that final salary staff approaching retirement can transfer to less demanding duties without loss of pension entitlement
* More flexibility for members who wish to convert part of their pension into a lump sum on retirement

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
