Pile up of packages in Harpenden delivery office is a 'shambles'

A postman has claimed that piles of letters and packages are building up in the Harpenden delivery office as it prepares to be closed down.

The office is currently in the transition process of being combined with the St Albans branch and the phased move is planned to be completed by September 24.

The postman, who asked not to be identified, has said that this is resulting in many items remaining undelivered.

He said: “It is not the postmen who are holding it back it is the management.

“They are failing their duty.

“We can’t do our job.”

The whole centre is currently being reshuffled, which has involved changes to routes, delivery and the day-to-day work load of its staff.

In April the Review reported that staff at the office had collected more than 10,000 signatures were collected against the move out of the town.

They suggested several sites for a new office in Harpenden but they were not followed up by Royal Mail.

The postman added: “We’re trying to understand why this modernisation had to take place at all.

“It is just a shambles.”

As well as household post, the Royal Mail employee is also concerned about businesses in the area that may suffer from the delayed post.

He said: “We have packages that should have been delivered.

“There are a lot of people in this town who run businesses from home.”

Sally Hopkins, Royal Mail spokesman, said: "Harpenden delivery office is in the process of relocating to St Albans as previously announced and we are making every effort to minimise any disruption to our service to customers.

“Changes may take a little while to bed in, however all mail for delivery going out every day.

“If customers have any queries about their mail, they should contact our customer service team on 08457 740 740 or via our website http://www.royalmail.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; so they can gather all the details so we can investigate."
