Five postmen started out on the Cotswolds Way yesterday in a bid to raise funds for the St Catherine's Hospice charity.
The hospice, which is based in Crawley, West Sussex, has provided specialised care to terminally ill people from the Sussex and Surrey area for 25 years, during which time it has become a much-loved organisation.
But, with only 30 per cent of its running costs coming from the NHS budget, St Catherine's relies heavily on donations from supporters, local communities and businesses and needs to raise over £4 million each year to keep going.
And doing their bit for the cause are Paul Jackson, David Simmonds, Michael Lane and David Warren from Caterham Delivery Office, along with their former colleague Phil Ockham - who has recently transferred to the Orpington office.
Paul explained: "We chose St Catherine's because it's done so much to help so many people in our area, and particularly in memory of David Simmonds's father, who was cared for at the hospice in the period before his death three years ago.
"We're walking the Cotswolds Way, which is a 102-mile long-distance footpath, running along the top of the Cotswold Hills from Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire to Bath, Somerset.
"We set off from Chipping Campden on Monday morning and aim to complete the walk by Friday," he said, adding; "And we're calling ourselves the Plodding Posties."
