FIRST-class postal workers are looking to clock up the miles in a bid to raise vital funds for cancer research.
Staff from the Royal Mail sorting office, in Clark Street, Hartlepool, are taking part in the nine-mile sponsored walk in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.
They are hoping to raise as much money as possible by getting the support of family members and friends.
So far 15 members of staff, ranging from postmen, line managers and sorting office workers, have signed up for the charity challenge.
The walk will be held on Sunday, September 9, at 10am.
The group will be setting off from Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience and walking along the front towards the Blue Lagoon at Seaton Carew, before heading back.
Postman Phillip Hetherington, who is dad to six-year-old Rebecca Hetherington, is helping to organise the event.
Phillip, 30, of Dunbar Road, said: “Walking is something that us postmen are good at so the nine miles shouldn’t be too bad.
“We are all looking forward to it and it is nice to be able to try and raise as much money as possible.
“So far 15 people have put their names down but more are signing up all the time. It should be a great event.”
Afterwards the walkers will be meeting in Cameron Sports and Social Club, in Waldon Street, where there will be a raffle.
Phillip added: “We are appealing for businesses to donate raffle prizes which we can raffle off to add to the overall total.
“It would be great to raise as much money as possible.”
Ben Todd, 29, a Royal Mail line manager, said: “It is a great effort by the staff in Hartlepool to try and raise as much money as possible for a good cause.”
Royal Mail selected Prostate Cancer UK as its charity of the year after more than 36,000 employees nationally selected it in a staff vote.
The aim is to raise at least £2m over two years for the charity, which would help fund up to 50 specialist prostate cancer nurses.
Royal Mail staff across the country are taking part in various fundraising initiatives and events.

"nine miles shouldn’t be too bad" - indeed, nost of us do that every working day anyway.
