Postal workers are to stage two more 48-hour strikes next month - followed by a series of "guerilla action" walkouts.
In the worst disruption since the dispute began earlier this year, 130,000 members of the Communication Workers Union will bring deliveries to a halt.
The union claims workers are furious at Royal Mail's bid to introduce changes to posties' pensions, switch staff to different shifts, axe bonus payments for working anti-social hours and scrap Sunday collections.
Dave Ward, deputy leader of the CWU, said: "We're not going to tolerate an employer that ignores its workforce, ignores the union and ignores its customers."
Workers will go on strike on October 5 to 6 and October 8 to 9. A rolling programme of strikes in various parts of Royal Mail's business will then take place on consecutive days, starting on October 15.
Royal Mail accused the union of being "unrealistic and unreasonable".
A spokesman said: "Instead of developing concrete and viable proposals for the business, the CWU is clinging to its historic stance of promising 'working groups' to discuss changes in the future for money upfront - changes which, in the past, have always failed to materialise."
Posties have already staged four national strikes and other forms of industrial action since the summer after rejecting a 2.5 per cent pay offer and modernisation plans, which the union said would cost 40,000 jobs.
Natalie Evans, of British Chambers of Commerce, said: "The strikes must stop - they are hitting the economy hard. Small firms rely on Royal Mail services to do business, and get hit in the pocket every time post is held up."
Consumer watchdog Postwatch said: "This is bad news for customers and for the economy."
The union said it remained committed to reaching an agreement.

Royal Mail's reputation 'in tatters'
Watford MP Claire Ward today told postal workers the reputation of Royal Mail in Watford is "in tatters".
Ms Ward met workers and Communication Workers Union representatives at a meeting in Croxley Green this morning to discuss the ongoing dispute at the town's sorting office, in Ascot Road.
Union members were told that progress is being made to resolve the dispute and meetings will be held today, with a view to agreeing the implementation of an agreement signed last week.
Ms Ward said: "You need to get this solved. My constituents are relying on you."
Barry Jennings, CWU divisional representative, said that now personal cars are not allowed to be used for work purposes, there are not enough facilities to do the job to the same standards. He suggested Royal Mail provide additional working hours and vehicles, to create "a robust delivery operation to maintain the quality of service for people in Watford".
He said: "What management want to do is rip hours out. We cannot accept that. If it takes a thousand hours to deliver post in Watford, they have to pay for a thousand hours.
"We need additional hours to make sure the quality of service is what people in Watford deserve."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Our clear company policy is to offer postmen and women Royal Mail transport to and from their delivery rounds, where it is needed. We don't encourage or require anyone to use private cars to get to their delivery route as routes are not designed with the use of private cars in mind. We constantly monitor resources for deliveries and put in extra resources - for example high capacity trolleys - where needed. This is the case in Watford and indeed nationally where we have made clear to the union the continuing and urgent need to modernise across the network."
