PRIME MINISTER David Cameron is supporting calls for Henley to have a post box painted gold in honour of Leander’s successful Olympic rowers.

Royal Mail is painting a post box in the home towns of each of the Great Britain gold medallists at London 2012 and has produced special commemorative stamps.

None of the Leander winners was born in Henley but Mayor Elizabeth Hodgkin says that Leander’s 12-medal haul should warrant the special honour.

She said: “Although a lot of the athletes don’t come from the town, they consider this as their place for rowing.”

Mr Cameron said: “Royal Mail have had an excellent Olympic games. They’ve produced these stamps, they are painting the pillar boxes.

“I don’t know who is doing the thinking for them but I think they’ve been really on the ball so why not Henley?”

Cllr Hodgkin suggested the post box in Hart Street would be suitable for painting as it would highly visible.

Royal Mail said the towns with which the gold medallists were most closely associated were being considered as well as their home towns.

A spokesman said: “This could be where they were born, where they grew up or where they presently live. We look at all these factors before reaching a considered choice.”

Leander athletes won two golds at the Olympics — Anna Watkins in the women’s double scull and Pete Reed and Alex Gregory in the men’s coxless four.

Altogether, Leander athletes won 12 medals, bringing the club’s total over the years to 111.

Mo Farah does most of his running in Portland, Oregon. Shouldn't they get a gold postbox?
He was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. Shouldn't they get a gold postbox?
I'm boring myself here...give the posh gits a gold postbox. Who cares?
