WHY WE MUST STRIKE

Post by lovejoy »

Why Should You Strike?
As the national union have called for the escalation of the current dispute some members many be thinking ‘I can’t afford this’ or ‘is it all worthwhile’

Over the next two weeks you will be given plenty of communications from the national union with relation to this subject. Royal Mail will also attempt to pump you with their propaganda on a daily basis.

This brief is aimed at highlighting both why we MUST support our union and also why this action is a more than reasonable response to Royal Mails attacks on our pensions, pay, terms and conditions.

PENSIONS
Members could potentially lose thousands of pounds as a result of Royal Mails pensions proposals. They want to raise the retirement age from 60 to 65 after 2010 for ALL active members (words taken from their own document!)

If the CWU are unable to reach an agreement by October 5th then members will be asked to participate in two 48 hour strikes. This means in defence of YOUR pensions the CWU are asking you to give up 4 days pay. We should all remember that this is against Royal Mails proposal to raise the pensionable age by 5 YEARS. We need you for 4 days, they want you for 1825 MORE DAYS BEFORE YOU CAN TAKE YOUR WELL EARNED RETIREMENT!

You should also use your WTL sessions to let your manager know that the proposals on pensions also affect them!

FLEXIBILTY
Many of you have stated to us that you would simply have to leave Royal Mail if their idea of total flexibility was introduced. To be very frank we should all start packing our bags if we do not win this dispute. Royal Mail has shown on the issue of Pensions and network changes that they will introduce things by executive action.

If we do not stand up and be counted together then we can all look forward to our hours changing on a daily basis, the start of annualised hours and moving to monthly pay!

MONEY
We are well aware that the financial implications of a dispute are very hard on us all. I am sure everyone can agree that thus far the CWU have protected us financially as much as possible. Royal Mail will focus on the fact that you will be losing 4 days pay in 2 weeks. We urge you to take all of the facts into consideration. Over the last 8 weeks the CWU have called NO action. This means by the time October 9th comes we would have taken 4 bouts of action in 10 weeks! This shows how committed the CWU are to protecting YOUR earnings.

We will as always keep everyone fully updated over the next few weeks and as always the national officers will press for a negotiated settlement. We ask ourselves can we afford to strike on a regular basis. Now is the time to examine whether we can afford not to.

Trouble is too many think that they are only in RM for a couple of years and that the pension won't affect them.

Twenty years later they are still in the job moaning.

I say to them if you work for RM you choose not just a job but a way of life and the sooner you stop being short sited and grow up the better for everybody.
