Police are appealing for information after two con artists swindled £250 from a Post Office counter.

Two men entered McColls, on Oxcliffe Road, Heysham, and headed to the post office counter on June 15.

One of the men approached the till with £480 in £20 notes and has asked the cashier to change the notes for £10 notes. The cashier did so and handed the wad back to him.

At this point a second man appeared, distracting the cashier, while the first man picked up the cash and removed £250 in notes with his other hand.

The second man then explained to the cashier that they wanted the cash to be sent to Spain to a friend.

The cashier told him he would need to do a bank transfer, so the pair asked for the cash to be changed back into £20 notes.

The cashier did this, believing there to still be £480 in the pile of cash, as he had not noticed the customer removing £250 of it.

The pair then left the branch with the extra cash before the con trick was spotted.

PC Thomas Draper said: “I believe this is a professional scam and that the offenders have likely committed the same offence elsewhere. I would appeal to anybody that recognises either of these men or with any information about this offence to come forward.”

The first man was around 35, with receding ginger hair. He wore a beige jacket with a black t-shirt underneath and spoke in an Eastern European accent, possibly Polish. The second man was about 35 with shoulder length black, greasy hair. He wore a grey t-shirt with a white logo and is also thought to be Eastern European, possibly Turkish.
