As for the CWU, our experience of private capital in public services is entirely negative. The opening of the postal service to full competition, five years before many EU countries, has created the basis for a financial crisis inside Royal Mail. Management’s response, having been turned over on privatisation, has been to squeeze the workforce.
Postal Workers have strongly supported the CWU’s strike campaign. At the time of writing, the CWU is putting together a new proposal to settle the dispute in line with postal workers needs. But such a conflict was entirely a result of market forces upon the industry.
The CWU is now pressing for the Government to review competition in the postal industry, in line with Labour’s Election Manifesto commitment of 2005. We are confident that the Government will honour this pledge.
But if this is useful for the future of our public postal service, why cannot such a review be implemented for all public services, in line with UNISON’s motion?

-Billy's being very naive there ,the Warwick Agreement etc was to keep the unions off New Labour's back before a election and stop them pulling the plug with their donations . Gordon's gone for Big Tent Politics -there's some very disparate people in those tents !!-just the other side of the same coin as the grinning wonder . All Style no substance . Billy's not going to rock the boat , needs a cushy number to see him out till he's 60 .
I wouldn't be placing too much faith in a Labour Party Election Manifesto. Either Billy is naive, or he thinks we all are. I remember reading the 1997 Manifesto which stated Labour would not abolish good schools. By 1999, they had abolished a secondary school and four primary schools in the are where I live. They're in the process of abolishing another two secondary schools and more primary schools in January.
