Police and Army bomb experts are set to examine a car abandoned in Londonderry by two hijackers, who also robbed a local post office.

The silver-coloured Volkswagen Passat was hijacked at about 10.15am on Monday, in the Sandbank Cottages area of Shantallow.

The two men responsible then drove it to a post office in the Culmore Road area, where they threatened staff and stole a sum of money from the safe.

The car has since been abandoned on the Cooney Road, which police say will be closed for the next few hours.
