The Post Office has appointed a director of comms as the company seeks to re-establish itself following its split from Royal Mail last month.

Former Government adviser Mark Davies, currently comms and campaigns director at Rethink Mental Health, will take up the post in July.

Post Office Ltd was a subsidiary of Royal Mail, which controversially hiked the price of stamps by up to 39 per cent in April and is to be privatised by the Government. The Post Office became a separate government-owned company in April.

Despite the closure of more than 6,000 branches during the past decade, Post Office is still the largest company in the country, with 11,700 outlets – more than any bank or supermarket.

Davies, who worked under Jack Straw from 2005 and 2010, including the period when he was Foreign Secretary, said part of his role would be ‘helping to change some of the perceptions about the Post Office'.

He said: 'Things are changing, and there are a lot of misconceptions about it – people think it is closing but there is no closure programme. People don’t know the range of things that the Post Office does.

‘There has been a huge government investment in the network, while 20 million people visit the post office each week.

‘It is a great opportunity to work for one of the most well recognised organisations in the country.’
