Postman Conor out to prove he is first class

Peterborough United trialist Conor Washington is a postman set on a first-class professional football career.

The 20 year-old (it’s his birthday today) spent last season delivering mail in St Ives while scoring goals for fun for the town’s United Counties League Premier Division side.

He scored 52 goals in 50 games, form that has attracted attention from Dagenham & Redbridge and Cambridge United, as well as Posh with whom he completes a three-day trial today.

Washington said: “I was excited about going to Peterborough. Obviously it’s a big step up, but it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“Testing myself against the players they have there was always going to be a big challenge, but there was never going to be any harm in trying.

“I’d already been to Dagenham and Cambridge and both of the visits were really promising. Both clubs have a reputation for developing young players and helping them fulfil their dreams which is important.

“The key for me could be choosing between a bigger club where I have less chance of breaking into the first team or a smaller club where I could end up playing.

“I have never had professional coaching before so if I have a choice, I would have to go to the club which would develop my career best.”

Wherever he ends up Washington will go highly recommended. His strike partner this season has been Junior McDougald, a former professional at Brighton, Dagenham & Redbridge, Millwall, Rotherham and Chesterfield.

McDougald said: “There are times this season when I have stood back and laughed at what Conor has done. He’s like the kid in the playground doing exactly what he wants.

“He’s got the lot in my opinion and it’s not a question of whether or not he makes it as a professional, it’s a case of who he signs for.

“Make no mistake he’s the real deal.”

Posh boss Darren Ferguson was impressed with his first look at Washington. The player has been training with the Posh youth team.

Ferguson said: “Conor was certainly a decent finisher which is what I expected given his goalscoring record.”
