Tyneside defeats doubles

Refusing to accept doubles helped Tyneside mail centre stamp out mis-sorted mail.

By applying World Class Mail tools and techniques and using process point analysis, the centre has eliminated mail being mis-sorted due to the integrated mail processor doubling up letters – saving £76,000 a year.

‘We identified the camera that detects doubles wasn’t picking them up properly,’ says Kevin McMahon, quality analyst (right).

‘So we broke down the process into its constituent parts to see where the problem could be arising, and found the camera was cutting out due to overheating.’

Thing of the past
Another computer screen was added to the machine so operatives could monitor overheating, but this only partially solved the problem.

‘Then we looked at the overheating issue itself and fitted vents to the machine,’ says Steve Slesser, night shift packet sorter (left).

‘Both the camera and the computer that drives it have been working perfectly since then, so doubles mis-sorts on the machine are now a thing of the past.’

The work done has been praised by director of Operational Excellence

Charles Towns and managing director of Operations and Modernisation Mark Higson, who visited Tyneside when they heard about the results.
