Countdown theme-tune marks well-loved postman's passing

A POPULAR Brockley postman is to be lowered into his grave to the theme tune of his favourite game show Countdown.

Peter Burton, 69, died suddenly in his armchair at his home in Wickham Road on May 3, in front of his wife Christina, 59.

Mrs Burton said her husband, a postie of 13 years, had been unwell after suffering intestine problems.

Paramedics had battled in vain to save him for an hour and 20 minutes.

His wife likened him to the famous children's television character Postman Pat, as he was an "avid cat lover" who died surrounded by his beloved pets.

Mrs Burton said: "He was well-known in the area. He was a good old-time postman and would go out in rain and snow with his sack on his back.

"He used to feel proud wearing his postman’s cap and that is going to go on his coffin."

The soundtrack to his funeral, which takes place at Honour Oak Crematorium on June 1 at 2.30pm, also includes his favourite artists Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Elton John.

Mrs Burton said: "We have got happy thoughts of him. He was a well-known character and very funny.

"Although we are mourning we are going to celebrate his life not grieve."

Mr Burton, a grandfather of six, gained a Long Service Award in 1999 for his work as a Brockley postman and retired in 2003.

Following his funeral there will be a wake at Brockley Social Club from 3.30pm.

I'm sorry, but I've got to do the joke... "I didn't realise there was a queue!"

I'm going to have the Countdown theme at my funeral too, and everyone's got to be in fancy dress :Very Happy

'In front of' isn't always taken to mean 'before' .
Local connection is it, that Carol Vordeman was born nearby in Pretatyn ?

We don't have any celebs around here since Gordon Lorenz passed away... they all move away once they're famous (and move here if they're disgraced- Mickey Thomas ring a bell? lol).

I say "in front of" because the phrase (as we say it) is "don't do that in front of me!". I'm sad to say that I only actually got the meaning of that phrase about 10 years ago after my Mum had been saying it since I was a kid. She wasn't saying it all the time I might add, just when it was appropriate.

John Prescott certainly move away before he was famous - and to Hull, that doesn't say much about Prestatyn.

I think it's great when there's abit of humour thrown in at a funeral. I agree with the widow that a funeral should be more about celebrating the life and character of the person rather than a day of mourning. I for one don't like the idea of relatives crying at my grave side, I'd be much happier to be "looking down" and seeing all my friends and family laughing and joking about memories of old! :thumbup

No offence meant at all to the deceased family and friends...

But I cannot resist asking if a conumdrum (eg. "spoodceem") suddenly appeared as the Countdown tune started and the coffin was lowered? :left:
