Safety fears over mail depot barrier plan

ROAD safety could be jeopardised if plans to install a barrier at Wrexham’s sorting office go ahead, it has been claimed.

Royal Mail is looking at the possibility of installing the barrier to strictly enforce its no customer parking rule at the Regent Street delivery office depot.

They say it will ensure the safety of anyone attending the site.

But community leaders and customers believe people will take their custom elsewhere and that accidents could happen at what they say is already a dangerous junction.

An angry customer, who did not wish to be named, heard of the plans when picking up a parcel at the depot.

“Wrexham sorting office is about to become a complete travesty of a service,” they said.

“When I asked where I was supposed to park, I was told ‘anywhere you can’.

“How ridiculous.

“We will all have to park elsewhere, and pay for the pleasure, then dash to the sorting office to collect our parcels and hope they’re not too heavy to make the journey very arduous.”

Councillors are worried the proposal will make parking in Rhosddu and the surrounding area even worse than it already is.

Gwyneth Roberts, county councillor for the Grosvenor ward, said: “Parking is the biggest problem in my ward.

“And for customers to not have anywhere to park when they collect their parcels is ridiculous.

“I’m worried residents in the surrounding streets will struggle even more to find space near their homes as customers try to find somewhere near the depot.

“If a barrier is installed it could also add to congestion on the stretch of road just outside where Central Road and Regent Street merge.

“I’m quite shocked Royal Mail is considering it.”

Steve Wilson, chairman of Rhosddu Community Council added: “This could be a nightmare.

“They are suggesting people park at the train station or in Island Green but they’ll have to pay for it and I think customers will resent that when Royal Mail costs are going up already.

“They may well start looking at alternative providers.

“I’m also worried about the effect on road safety because staff vehicles will have to stop at the barrier which will block what is already a very busy and dangerous road.

“Accidents could happen.”

Morag Turnbull, spokesman for Royal Mail, said: “We have a large number of Royal Mail vans moving in and out of the yard at our delivery office in Regent Street, Wrexham.

“Following an inspection by the local environmental health department we are looking at the option to install a barrier system and restrict vehicle access to members of the public in the future so as to ensure the safety of anyone based at or visiting Wrexham delivery office.”

We dont have to provide parking. I wish they would stop parking at my office. Its like a family outing, they dont control their children. I've lost count of the times i've seen people walk out in front of vans/lorries/artics and its just sheer luck no one has been killed.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Our yard is secure and no customer parking............unless they park in front of the gate, if they want their packets then they could try being in or getting it delivered to their workplace.
