THE Royal Mail has moved to explain the lack of postboxes in a South Derbyshire village after residents complained about the shortage at public meetings.
South Derbyshire District Council was asked by members of the public to investigate why so many boxes had been removed from Newhall and to contact the firm over its plans for the placement of the pillar boxes.
Debra Townsend, democratic services officer at the authority, submitted written requests to the company in order to get to the bottom of the problem.
Malcolm McBride, customer service advisor, stated in a letter: “My investigations into the enquiry have included checking all available service information and the collections manager for the area advised me that there are only two boxes in the area which have been removed.
“These would be the box in Midland Road, which was removed due to the box being rotten and letting water in.
“Also, we did a survey and the amount of mail collected over a week was not enough to warrant replacing it.
“The other postbox on High Street was removed several years ago due to the position of the box and the fact that the postman collecting from it was injured by kids on bikes while he was collecting.
“Due to this, the move to close it was authorised by a senior manager on health and safety grounds.
“I hope this answers the questions posed and in every instance we follow a strict route when a postbox is removed.
“Please accept my sincere apologies on behalf of the Royal Mail for the problem that the people of Newhall have had, and our thanks for taking the time to make us aware of this.
“Please be assured that we take letting our customers down seriously and will use this information to make further improvements.”
