ROYAL mail bosses have “listened to the views” of Stourport residents and will not progress with the closure of the town’s delivery office.

Postal chiefs were looking into moving the High Street office to Kidderminster but have quashed the plans for the current time.

The future of the delivery office has been uncertain for about two years and staff, businesses and residents have voiced concerns that moving it would have a detrimental effect on the service.

Val Bodden, Royal mail spokeswoman, said: “Senior representatives from Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have been meeting regularly in recent weeks to discuss the proposed merger of Stourport Delivery Office into Kidderminster Delivery Office.

“After carefully studying all aspects of the proposed merger in a detailed feasibility plan, it has been decided not to progress with this merger at the current time.”

Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier, who has met with Royal Mail, said he was “delighted” with the news.

He said: “This is really good news for Stourport. There has been strong local objection to this closure for some time and I am pleased that Royal Mail has finally listened to the views of the local population.”

He added: “Following on from the recent announcement of investment into the Stourport basins, this is the second bit of good news that the town has received in recent weeks.
