Delayed mail sparks anger

PEOPLE in Wallingford are furious at poor postal delivery services, which have hit traders, councils, and businesses alike. Complaints have gone to local MP Ed Vaizey in a bid to get a more efficient system.

Royal Mail has apologised, but said everything is due to industrial action by the Communications Workers' Union, and will not be sorted out until industrial action stops.

But that is no comfort to people who are left waiting for deliveries, which never arrive or are weeks late.

Disabled Kate Rose, 60, from the Northgate estate, had to get into her car and drive to the sorting office on Hithercroft to pick up parcels and ordinary mail.

She said: "The bad delivery service has meant people not using the postal system as much - I use email or buy online because one cannot guarantee the mail delivering the order or getting it back here. My post has improved lately because I complained directly to my MP. I'm sure that only constant complaining will get results."

Town clerk, Andrew Rogers, said: "We send out agendas and committee reports but there have been many occasions when councillors have not received them."

Marcus Harris, a member of both the town council and South Oxfordshire District Council, said: "I know morale is low among the postmen, and that is very sad because the people are usually good, friendly and committed.

"I know a lot of them are putting themselves out to improve the service, and do so without pay, because the ruling has been imposed that deliveries not done by 1pm must come back to go out with the next day's deliveries."

Jean Hughes, 43, from Cholsey said: "Deliveries are bad but so is the outgoing service.

Brian James, 64, from Reading Road, Wallingford, said: "The Royal Mail is constantly shooting itself in the foot."

Traders in Wallingford have been hit by late deliveries and by poor Royal Mail standards.

A spokesman said: "Customers don't take kindly to being told that their orders never arrived - they just think we're being inefficient."

A postman, who would not be named because of feared reprisals from Royal Mail, said: "I and several of my colleagues have given up their own time to deliver in the afternoons even though we're not paid for it.

"Most postmen take a pride in their jobs, and we're unhappy about the service now being offered, but we also understand the need for industrial action to get us a decent wage."

For Royal Mail, Jane Thomas said: "We are paying normal levels of overtime, based on the average for this time of the year. What we won't do is pay people extra money to sort backlogs of mail that their actions have caused - it makes no sense to allow people who have taken strike action to recoup their lost income, which is why there is the 1pm cut-off point.

"We will be working through the disruption to collect and deliver letters for our customers as quickly as we can."
