Leeds and West Yorkshire: Post office counters could be re-opened in major rethink

Campaigners who fought to keep post offices open in Leeds and West Yorkshire have welcomed news that Post Office Ltd are to invest £1.34 billion into a network support programme, opening 50 local and main branches.

A total of 60 post offices in Yorkshire have closed down in recent years.

Development of 6,000 current post offices into modern branches will also be completed by 2015, which Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves hopes will include Hawksworth Wood Post Office in Leeds.

She said: “Residents went without a Post Office for over a year.

“They now use a mobile van, but I won’t stop campaigning until there is a permanent home for Hawksworth Wood Post Office, and proper post office services across the constituency.

“I hope some of this money can be invested on Leeds post offices.”

Beeston resident Manny Dominguez said: “The Beeston Road branch was a community hub and now elderly people have to make the journey into Leeds. I hope the Government will consider these factors when deciding where the money will go.”

Conservative candidate for Horbury and South Ossett, Richard Wakefield, said: “The post offices should never have been closed. Surely this proves we should have been listened to.”

Define "Proper Post Office Services" cos all you'll get at the moment is PO Local.
