Three Royal Mail employees have been suspended from the delivery office in Crowle following an investigation.

The suspensions have caused numerous delays to the postal service and mix-ups to residents' mail in the town .

It was initially thought the chaos had been caused by the new changes the Royal Mail had made towards the way it delivers mail in North Lincolnshire – which has seen new delivery methods and the adoption of revised delivery routes in an attempt to modernise the way they operate.

But the Royal Mail has confirmed the reason why residents were on the receiving end of disruption was due to the unexpected shortage of staff following the suspensions.

Spokesman Heulyn Gwyn Davies, of Royal Mail, said: "Royal Mail can confirm that three employees from Crowle Delivery Office have been suspended pending an investigation by the Royal Mail Security Team relating to the intentional delay of mail.

"Royal Mail customers should be confident in our services and systems, but where we are alerted to problems, either through our own stringent checks or from information supplied by our customers, we take decisive action to investigate.

"We constantly review our operation to ensure it's as robust as possible and customer's mail is secure. We would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused by this incident and assure them that arrangements are in place to deliver the service they expect from Royal Mail."

The Telegraph stepped in to find out what was going on after residents contacted us to say they had experienced letters caught up in a backlog, letters being posted through the wrong letter boxes and the town's posties being posted to cover Scunthorpe rounds and vice-versa.

Crowle resident Berrie Anderson, 62, of Wyvern Close, said: "It's horrendous. I usually get one letter a day, but recently we can go two to three days without any, then a stack come through, so you know it's been held back.

"I had an important medical letter shoved through my letter box at 3.30pm. I didn't see who put it through but I think it had gone to the wrong house, been opened and then sealed with tape and put through my door."
