Unions are warning of a 'winter of discontent' over pay
Unions have voted to take "co-ordinated industrial action" against the government over its below-inflation pay settlement for public sector workers.
The TUC annual conference heard that, unless a 2.5% rise in two stages was improved upon, there could be a series of mass strikes this autumn.

Mark Serwotka, leader of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCU), said many workers were on "poverty wages".

On Monday Gordon Brown said the pay deal was needed to keep inflation down.

A motion from by the PCS and the National Union of Teachers said many public sector workers earn as little as £11,000 a year.

To loud applause from TUC delegates, Mr Serwotka said: "When Gordon Brown slams the door in our face, we have to say we aren't accepting it. Unity is strength."

Steve Cox, of the Prison Officers' Association, added: "None of us want a repeat of the winter of 1978. However, if the government continues like this, we have to be ready for action.

"If we are left with no alternative, we will all be out on the street."

PCS members at the Department for Work and Pensions have already rejected a three-year deal by three to one and are likely to be balloted on possible strike action within weeks.

Prison guards have staged a walkout, while teachers, police and nurses have been among workers protesting at Mr Brown's public sector pay deal.

But, in his first address to the TUC as prime minister, Mr Brown said on Monday that "pay discipline" was "essential to prevent inflation, to maintain growth and create more jobs - and so that we never return to the old boom and bust of the past".

We're not talking about tomorrow here - we're talking brave words for the masses.

Anything the TUC organises, if anything at all that is, would be too late to prevent RM from executing their late starts, flexibility and pension rights. I for one won't be holding my breath. After all we are already involved and the best the CWU can come up with is "sometime in September". Is there such a thing as self asphyxiation?

Why the TUC still allow these parasites to speak at their conference is a puzzle to me. If the Labour party intended to work with the Unions then they would have repealed at least some of the Tories Anti-Union laws a long time ago.

The labour party is dead, is no more, ceased to be, kaput. so now we have new conservative in charge and like the mugs we are we paying them money through our subs to the union. new conservatives dont give a flying fart about us and its about time we stopped paying them money or giving us the option to stop paying them money. either that or whats the point in being in a union when no one listens to us

You do have the option to stop your political levy - but you don't have the option to stop paying the Tories through your grocery bill or any other retailer who supports them.

Greens would be no better as soon as they got a whiff of power. In Germany where they've got parliamentary seats they've been really right wing.

Percentage pay rises should be abolished, they really make my blood boil.I,ll take the same rise as Brown in pounds and pence please.
