AN employee was caught stealing from post while working at the Royal Mail sorting office in Manor Royal.
Girishkumar Nayee, of Kilmead Close, Northgate, was working on a temporary contract over the festive period when he was spotted rifling through letters.
The 27-year-old was sentenced at Mid Sussex Magistrates' Court last Wednesday having pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and three of handling stolen goods.
Denis Bradley, prosecuting, told the court Nayee was being watched on CCTV while working at the sorting office in James Watt Way on the night of December 14.
He said: "It came to the attention of two operators that one of the employees was paying a lot of attention to one of the containers.
"He was seen leaning into one of the containers and appeared to have his upper body inside of it for a number of seconds and then went down on to the floor and put something into his left hand trouser pocket.
"He left and went to the toilet and a couple of minutes later one of the officers went to see where he was, but he had entered a cubicle.
"He was later seen to put on his black jacket, when he went into the container, and put something else into his left, inside jacket pocket."
The police were called and Nayee was taken to Crawley Police Station to be searched.
An Arsenal Football Club ring which he had stolen from post was found and a mobile phone, which had been stolen although Nayee claimed not by him.
Officers then searched Nayee's home and discovered 12 cheques from the Inland Revenue worth £14,371.79 and two mobile phones, one of which Nayee admitted he had stolen at the sorting office.
Geoff White, defending, said: "Mr Nayee pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity. He is thoroughly ashamed of himself. He wants to deal with this and move on with his life."
Nayee was ordered by magistrates to carry out 120 hours of unpaid community work over 12 months and to pay £25 to redeliver the stolen items.

Why would you steal cheques made out to the HMRC?? You can't cash them, you can't pay them into your account (unless you're called Inlandi Revenuei).
