MP Owen Paterson’s plea for postal address rethink

North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson has called on mail bosses to reconsider their decision to keep the name Shrewsbury in Wem’s postal addresses.

He wrote to Royal Mail calling for changes after receiving complaints over post turning up at the wrong addresses, causing people to miss payments.

But the company said it has no intention of making any changes.

Mr Paterson described the response as ‘unacceptable’ and has written back asking for Royal Mail to reconsider.

Wem Town Council has already written to mail bosses over the problems.

In his letter Mr Paterson said: “I have had numerous cases over the years of letters being misdirected or mislaid due to Shrewsbury being included in Wem addresses.”

Royal Mail spokeswoman Val Bodden said postal address was designed to ensure the accurate sorting, routing and delivery of customers’ mail.
