Work begins on mail centre extension

THE first sod of earth has been dug marking the beginning of a multi-million pound extension to Sheffield Mail Centre.

Royal Mail’s base on Brightside Lane is being expanded to house the latest automation equipment and a state-of-the-art fleet of vehicles after a decision to transfer processing work to Sheffield from Doncaster and Hull.

The ceremony to start the project, which is due to be completed by spring 2013, was attended by senior Royal Mail management and Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun Sylvia Dunkley.

Royal Mail said the work is part of a £25 million modernisation scheme in South Yorkshire.

When the project is completed it is expected that almost 800 people will be based at the site which will handle mail for the S, DN, HU and LN postcode areas.

They will process three million items per day compared to the current peak of two million items at Brightside Lane.

Royal Mail’s north east regional director, Alison Wright, said: “We are extremely excited by the official start of the work on the extension. It will enable us to modernise and it will house the latest machines.”
