MP slams changes to Guisborough deliveries

CHANGES to mail deliveries in Guisborough have come under fire from a Teesside MP.

Plans by the Royal Mail to close its delivery depot in the town were overturned after protests from staff and residents, as reported inset.

However, the Royal Mail has now said it is reforming delivery times in the Guisborough area.

The changes have raised concerns that customers could be faced with later deliveries with Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Tom Blenkinsop fearful of a worse level of service for local people and businesses.

The Royal Mail said deliveries would “continue in the morning and for a longer period during the day”.

It added that “many” customers will still get post by lunchtime.

Mr Blenkinsop, who was part of the campaign to save the delivery office, said: “After winning the battle to keep the local delivery office open, this looks like Royal Mail exacting revenge for this defeat at the hands of the local community.”

Last year, Royal Mail decided the Morgan Drive office was to be relocated to Malmo Court, on Redcar’s Kirkleatham Business Park.

But this was reversed after the MP presented a 5,000-plus signature petition to the House of Commons and to Ed Davey, Minister for Postal Services.

The Royal Mail said changes won’t cut levels of service for local people. Over coming weeks, postal staff will use new delivery methods and revised delivery routes.

It added that the changes are needed as fewer letters are now posted daily and it needs to organise delivery routes to be as efficient as possible.

A Royal Mail spokesman said “The time customers receive mail will depend on where they live on the new delivery route. This may be later or possibly earlier than current delivery times.

“When mail volumes vary, we may need to adjust delivery arrangements and times.”

Locals, councillors and business groups are being advised of the changes and anyone with queries should call Royal Mail customer services on 0845 601 1399.

I wonder how long it will take the buffoons in charge at Royal Mail, that no matter what, later deliveries of mail during the day, will be seen by many to be a sign of utter failure?

I'll start off the bidding with an offer of, NEVER.
