LUCKY villagers in New Abbey have been receiving a first-class postal service for more than 25 years, thanks to dedicated Margo Baird.

The postie has never missed a round since she took on the job in 1987.

And now the 52-year-old’s dedication has been rewarded by the community.

New Abbey Community Council chairman Alec Osman presented Mrs Baird with a certificate for her service on Monday.

He said: "Margo has never missed a round due to illness. She is out every day, in all weather, on her bike delivering the mail.

"She is well liked in the community and is doing a great service to the village."

Margo, originally from Kirkbean, said: "It’s a nice surprise. It’s nice to be appreciated.

"You see a lot of people around the village and a lot of things over the years, but the strangest thing that used to happen was at the school.

"There used to be a black cat that would leap on to my back when I was passing and she got a ride down the hill with me on the bike.

"She did it for about two years. The children at the school loved it."

And Margo is adamant there is no secret to her never having missed a round. She said: "You just have to keep going."

"You just have to keep going." - that's precisely what many a DOM keeps telling us.

Nice to be on the same duty for 25 years, lucky to stay on the same one for 25 weeks now :cuppa
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
