WHEN postman Pete Boardman first visited Ghana in 2007 he was so shocked by the deprivation he witnessed he became determined to return and do what he could to make a difference.

And five years later he plans to fulfil that dream and improve the lives of some of those he met.
The 48-year-old's first visit was a six-week trip to coach football arranged via the Gap Year organisation.

Pete, who was then chairman of Crediton Youth Football Club and lives in Guildford Close, Exwick, said: "I met some really good players. However, when I saw that most of the team were playing barefoot and that the family I was living with, the Gimats, didn't even have running water, I knew I needed to return with a different purpose."

After leaving Ghana, he stayed in contact with the family, who live near Accra, and they have helped organise his second trip, which will involve visiting schools to distribute stationery, books and calculators that he will be taking with him. He will also be visiting football teams to provide them with kit and boots.

He said: "I felt that I had unfinished business in Ghana, but had never found it to be the right time to go back. However, last year I realised that I couldn't wait any longer, as you don't know how long you are going to be around for. I think this is something I need to do with my life, so I've spent the past six months preparing for a trip."

He has paid for the visit himself, including flights, accommodation and most of the materials he is taking to hand out. He said: "I'm taking everything they asked for which is merely everyday things that many of us take for granted.

"I will also be giving money to the family I stayed with so they will finally be able to have running water."

Pete, a postman for 15 years in Exeter and Crediton, said: "I would recommend a trip like this to anyone. I think it's important to know that what I'm taking is going straight to those who need it, and will instantly make a difference on a more personal level. I hope others planning to do the same will get in contact with me."

The father-of-three will be taking his daughter Fern, 17, who is training to be a hairdresser, along with him. He said: "She has always wanted to help but has previously been too young to be involved. Now she is going to teach in the schools while we are out there."

They are also looking for support. Anyone who has old and unwanted football kit or school supplies, or who wants to find out more, can contact Pete at 11 Guildford Close, Exwick, Exeter, EX4 2HX, or call him on 07843 098919.
