What do you think of scruffy Union flag?

Ragged, ripped and hung upside down.

This picture shows the Union flag that hangs at the Royal Mail centre on Milner Street.

But the national flag's sorry state has lead to complaints sent in to the Guardian.

Royal Mail has yet to respond to requests for a comment.

What do you think

Delivery offices have flag poles as well. I know there are two outside our mail centre but have hardly ever looked at them. This one is a bit of a fu**ing disgrace really.

Surprised they've even got a flag there! That it hasn't been taken down for health and safety.

It's a disgrace , worse than not flying one at all. It's a pity unlike most countries the UK seems not to fly the national flag from goverment buildings.

How exactly would anyone know it is hanging upside down?

The Union Flag is not symmetrical.

The easiest way to spot it is 1 o'clock and 4 o'clock positions should be high (or the right hand side) more white lower, and the 10 oclock and 7 o'clock ones lower (or left hand side) more white to top.

The Beaumont Scottish Union Flag. :left:

In objecting to the design of Union Flag adopted in 1606, whereby the cross of Saint George surmounted that of Saint Andrew, a group of Scots took up the matter with John Erskine, 18th Earl of Mar, and were encouraged by him to send a letter of complaint to James VI, via the Privy Council of Scotland, which stated that the flag's design "will breid some heit and miscontentment betwix your Majesties subjectis, and it is to be feirit that some inconvenientis sail fall oute betwix thame, for our seyfaring men cannot be inducit to resave that flage as it is set down".[21] Although documents accompanying this complaint which contained drafts for alternative designs have been lost, evidence exists, at least on paper, of an unofficial Scottish variant, whereby the Scottish cross was uppermost.

I got into a pub debate the other day...It's not called a Union Jack unless the flag is being used on the Jack mast of a ship and at all other times it should be called the Union Flag.

It wasn't a terribly exciting debate to be fair

What if it's being used as the boxer shorts of an illiterate pissed up holidaymaker?

If the cloth is being used to hide Jack's "mast" - it is a Union Jack.

Only in Britain would it be considered tasteful to treat your country's flag like this.
At least the Brazilians know how to show a little....respect.

Does look crap, it needs to be replaced asap, I remember a you tube clip of the a1 Scotland England border http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSUfTNm5XFU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; the English flag were ragged, one missing, whereas the Scottish flag was well maintained, somebody must have kicked off as I went up there last year and it was replaced with new flags, noticed all the catering van were on the English side as they probably couldn't get Scottish catering licence, not many people realise that Scotland has its own laws, this could be the new border control point if Scotland goes its own way :)
