A KINDLY postman made sure Christmas was not cancelled for one elderly woman.

Shirley Honywill, 73 of Rhyl, lost her Marks and Spencer vouchers and more than £100 when her purse went missing, but canny postie Kenny Ross tracked her down to give her an unexpected pre-Christmas gift.

Shirley, who walks with the aid of a stick, said she dropped her purse while leaving a bus, and had not even noticed the loss before it was returned to her.

She said: “I heard the ring of the bell and a man was standing there with a bushy white beard, a bobble hat and a red postman’s jacket. I thought Father Christmas had arrived!

“He said ‘have you lost anything?’ and he handed me my purse. It had my credit cards and everything. I would have been panicking.”

Ms Honywill said she would not have known what to do if she had lost £100 this time of year, as it was to cover her bills.

She said: “I can’t say how grateful I am and I’d like people to know how kind he was to bring it back to me.

“He was Father Christmas to me.”

Kenny, 60, a postman for 43 years, was out delivering parcels in the town when he spotted the purse on the pavement.

He said: “I stopped the van and picked up the purse. I looked inside to find an address. I knew where the street was so I went round and delivered it to her. She didn’t even realise she had lost it at the time but she was really glad I had found it.”

Graham Simpson, Royal Mail manager at Rhyl Delivery Office, said the modest delivery man had not mentioned his find to anyone.

Mr Simpson said: “I am not surprised, as Kenny would do something like that and not expect to be rewarded or think that anyone else wouldn’t have done the same thing. But we are proud of his actions and so are the rest of the team at Rhyl Delivery Office.”

Graham the office manager was glad this had been brought to his attention as he couldn't miss this opportunity to sack a long serving postie for being off route

Graham is actually a really nice DOM to be fair to him, one of the few you can have a laugh with. When I talk about the few nice DOMs I know, he's one of them.
