FAMILIES living in a new Bishop's Cleeve estate missed out on Christmas cards and presents after Royal Mail deemed it too dangerous to deliver.

Eight homeowners moved into the Homelands estate in the village last month.

But the new residents were outraged they could not get their Christmas post as Royal Mail said the area was a health and safety risk as house building was ongoing.

Roger Haddrell moved into one of the homes in Cowslip Drive with his wife Caroline and two children, Elliott, 11, and Chelsea, eight, just before Christmas.

But after Royal Mail refused to deliver post to his door, he was forced to instead pay £40 to have his mail redirected to Cheltenham's sorting office.

Then, when his wife went to collect the post, she was told she needed ID which had the new address on it – but this proof was among the items they were expecting to receive through the post.

He said: "There are Christmas cards and presents for the kids that we are missing. I am also trying to resolve our utility bills from the previous property but it is proving to be difficult. The risk is that we will have red letters coming through."

When Mr Haddrell asked Royal Mail why they could not deliver to his new address, he was told it was a health and safety issue.

He said: "There is no raised metal work and there are concrete slopes up to the driveways. If the postmen have buggies they could very easily use the ramps to get onto the pavements. It just seems like someone is being a jobsworth. They didn't even tell Bovis or any of us about the problem."

Royal Mail spokesman Valerie Antoine said deliveries had now started at the addresses.

Bovis Homes spokesman Scott Curtis said he was puzzled by the issue. He said: "The first customers moved into Homelands at the end of last month and we already have a number of homes occupied there. Before any customer moves into a Bovis Home it is rigorously checked by the National House Building Council – as are the surrounding roads and pavements – to ensure there are no health and safety issues.

"Given that the access road and pavements have been passed by the NHBC, we're bemused Royal Mail felt they were unable to deliver post there."

If we look after our own H&S and don't deliver the DOM will support your decision.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I know that but the papers always have a go at us for being 'jobsworths'

But if the pavements have been checked first as safe for use by the general public (as they have to be) by the NHBC, then I don't see why they wouldn't deliver there? I had a new build estate on my parcel round, which I invariably ended up delivering the mail for in the afternoons  because the postie for the duty who it was supposed to be on refused to deliver it because it would apparently make his round too long and he would then be home after his usual time of 11:30am... :chuckle

ANYWAY, the pavements were safe for use for all the houses that were finished, and the houses that weren't finished, were completely blocked off anyway. The only problem I was was no friggin numbers on the bloody doors!!! :evil/mad
Does this rag smell of chloroform to you?
