POSTMEN are being chased down the street by unhappy customers because services on the Marsh have been in "meltdown" since the system was changed, a furious resident has told the Herald.

Householders received letters in the summer from Royal Mail outlining the changes that would mean they would get deliveries "maybe later or possibly earlier than you are used to".

But residents say letters are increasingly being delivered to the wrong addresses or not at all, and the Royal Mail has admitted to the Herald that there have been some "initial hiccups".

The Christmas period is traditionally the busiest time of year for Royal Mail, but according to critics the problems on the Marsh – and in the New Romney area in particular – are not related to the festive season and go back several months.

Wendy Nevard, of St Nicholas Road in Littlestone, said: "I've chased the new postman down the road with letters wrongly put through our letterbox, and delivered myself an important council tax rebate letter to my next-door neighbour, which had been wrongly delivered.

"Staff at the sorting office in New Romney say they're getting constant ear-bashing now from disgruntled members of the public.

"But the real fault, I've been told, lies with the 'big chiefs' at HQ and the new system of working."

Miss Nevard, who fought against the closure of Littlestone post office in 2008, said some deliveries are now being missed altogether, meaning her mother only got cards after her birthday.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "There were initial hiccups when implementing the changes in the area in June, but we believe they have since settled down."
