Armed men target post office in brazen raid

ARMED robbers raided an isolated country post office in the early evening this week.

A gang of three men wielding a sledgehammer, a crowbar and an axe burst into the McColl’s store and Post Office, in Hillgate, Gedney Hill, at about 5.15pm on Monday.

The thugs, wearing dark clothing and balaclavas, threatened staff and made off with a quantity of cash in a stolen Land Rover Discovery.

Detective Sergeant Lance Morgan, from Spalding CID, said: “This is a very unusual crime for Lincolnshire and it has understandably left the community shaken.

“The red Land Rover Discovery was found abandoned at a farm in Luttongate at 7.50pm the same evening and we are appealing to any witnesses who may have seen the vehicle or the suspects prior to the offence or at any point afterwards.”

The Land Rover was driven by a fourth man waiting in the vehicle, making off in the direction of Parson’s Drove.

It was stolen from near Market Deeping between 9.15am and 2pm on Monday and approached the post office from Holbeach direction.

The Discovery is a commercial model with the rear side windows blacked out and has a 51 number plate.

The store was targeted by brazen raiders in May last year when a mechanical digger was used to rip a cash machine out of the side of the building.

The ATM was out of order and empty at the time.
