"My friends have started calling me 'Super Mario'," joked CWU National Executive Council (NEC) member Mark Baulch today, as he reached the halfway stage of this year's "Movember" campaign.

Along with tens of thousands of men across the UK - Mark has donated his upper lip for a whole month as part of the nationwide effort to raise funds and awareness of male cancers.

"We're urging everyone to donate what they can to this vitally important cause," Mark continued, adding: "If you can give something, you can donate online or by post."

Last year, over 112,000 Movember supporters in the UK raised £11.7 million, which helped to fund work fighting the number one and two male-specific cancers - prostate and testicular cancer.

A broad range of innovative, world-class programmes working on awareness and education, survivorship and research are run either directly by Movember or its men's health partners - The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research - and this is where all monies raised are directed to.

Fellow NEC members Noel McClean and Chic McGlynn, Tony Bouch, Ian Ward and Steve Jones from the postal executive, telecoms national officer Davie Bowman and Eastern Region secretary Paul Moffatt are also sporting this month's 'moust'-have fashion statement.

"Half way through the month and we are all looking magnificent," insists Noel, "although I must admit, I've been likened to one of the Chuckle Brothers a few times!"

Film buffs may remember the spectacular 'handlebar' that Samuel L Jackson sported in Tarantino's classic Pulp Fiction, a look that the CWU's Chic McGlynn is aiming to make his own for the month.

The 'Movember mo' is getting a lot of laughs for both Ian and Tony, while Davie has opted for the full-bodied 1930s-style 'tache and Paul describes his as "the stylish David Niven/Terry Thomas 'cad' look."

One in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, a condition that afflicts some 30,000 men each year and kills 10,000 annually.

Anti-cancer campaigners point out that, as well as raising funds for vital research that can improve the medical fightback, simply raising awareness can significantly impact on these figures, as early diagnosis vastly improves survival and recovery chances.
