ROYAL Mail chiefs have been warned to act “effectively and transparently” in bringing a rogue postman to justice.

Kirkintilloch East MP Gregg McClymont spoke out after receiving complaints from constituents who were amongst the victims of the recent missing mail scandal.

It’s been more than a month since the stash of letters and parcels were uncovered during a police raid and no criminal charges have yet been made.

Harestanes resident Jean Cassells contacted Mr McClymont after family memebrs found out several mail items had gone missing.

They included £20 in cash, a £20 voucher and three CDs.

She said: “Why was this man not dismissed immediately rather than being allowed to resign?

“What is being done to recoup the items removed from this mail?

“I know of many other people who have had similar ‘delayed mail’ delivered with items missing.

“Individually they may not be of significant value, but added together they must total a huge amount.”

MP Gregg McClymont said: “This is an extremely serious situation which Royal Mail must deal with effectively and transparently.

“These thefts have caused a great deal of anxiety in Kirkintilloch and the surrounding villages and communities.

“I have written to the chief executive of Royal Mail and have been assured that a robust investigation will be carried out regarding the incident.

“Constituents who have been victims of these thefts can contact me at my office on 01236 457788. I would also urge anyone who believes they still have outstanding undelivered items to visit their local post office or the Royal Mail website and complete a P58 form.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail security continues to investigate the matter. A case will be prepared for the procurator fiscal with regards to the quantity of mail recently recovered in Kirkintilloch.”

Missing mail case sent to the procurator fiscal

A PROBE into missing post in Kirkintilloch, Lenzie and Milton of Campsie has concluded.

Piles of letters and other posted items were discovered in a Kirkintilloch house in September – prompting an inquiry by Royal Mail.

Since then the Herald has been inundated with calls from residents claiming they have had delayed mail delivered with cash and other items missing.

A Royal Mail spokesperson told the Herald that a report had now been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Meanwhile, council bosses have acted to allay fears that important housing allocation documents could have been included in the missing mail.

In a letter to Councillor Charles Kennedy, the council’s housing manager Grant Mackintosh said: “Our allocations policy requires that two further letters are issued before an application is cancelled.

“It is possible that the odd case may have had one or even two letters not delivered, but it is less likely that all three letters were not delivered.”
