POLICE investigating a post office robbery have been stopping motorists in the area where the getaway car was abandoned.

Two men wearing balaclavas forced their way into Shireoaks Post Office, in Shireoaks Common, near Worksop, at about 6pm on Wednesday. They stole cash, stamp books and car keys before fleeing the scene in a black Jeep Cherokee belonging to the postmaster.

The Jeep was later found abandoned in lay-by on the northbound stretch of the A57, near Shireoaks.

Officers believe there may have been another vehicle waiting in the lay-by, which the offenders then got into as part of their escape.

Officers were stopping vehicles travelling on the road and speaking to people in Shireoaks on Thursday.

It was part of their attempts to find people who may have information so they can build up more of a picture on how the offenders got away.

Inspector Steve Cartwright said: "The A57 would have been busy at that time of night and motorists may have seen the Jeep Cherokee or the offenders in it.

"I would urge anyone who saw the vehicle or anyone acting suspiciously at the time of the incident to contact us."

Witnesses or anyone with information should call Nottinghamshire Police on 0300 300 9999, and ask for Worksop CID.

Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
