Minister under fire after telling jobless to take Christmas postie jobs

Tory minister Chris Grayling was under fire yesterday after telling the jobless to take casual work.

He said taking temporary jobs such as becoming a Christmas postman would help “give you an idea of the kind of career you want”.

The gaffe was immediately compared to Norman Tebbit’s “get on your bike” jibe from the 1980s.

Labour said the remarks were patronising to Britain’s 2.57 million unemployed as jobless figures hit a 17-year high.

The Works and Pensions minister was commenting on figures showing Royal Mail has already been inundated with 80,000 applications for just 18,000 Christmas vacancies.

But Mr Grayling urged more people to apply saying: “Now is a great time to apply for one of the tens of thousands of Christmas jobs.

“Temporary work gives you an idea of the kind of career you might want, looks good on your CV and gives you something to talk about in job interviews.”

The right-winger failed to point out the postie jobs are at the minimum wage of £6.08 an hour and would cost applicants their Jobseeker’s Allowance if they worked more than 16 hours a week. They would have to reapply after Christmas... then wait about 10 days for the benefit to start again. The gaffe-prone MP, who has four homes, was demoted last year after supporting the owners of a guest house who banned gay couples.

Shadow Employment Minister Stephen Timms said: “Chris Grayling is out of touch with how tough it is to get a job. Unemployment is soaring, and more young people are out of work than ever before.”

Jobs in Britain are disappearing fast, and at a rate of knots. We seem utterly incapable of accepting the common sense approach to asylum & immigration, for example, we cannot give employment to all currently here, so let's shut the doors until we can. Oh no, not the Brits.
So, it can only get worse, and worse, and worse.
I shudder to think of how this will all pan out, I really do.

WHAT YHOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT THESE POLES AS YOU CALL IT HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE IN THIS COUNTRY AND WORK JUST AS WE HAVE THE SAME RIGHT IN POLAND

FREE MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE AND TRADE

little britain went out with the british empire

live and let live

get over it

but the usa and australia have decent imagration policy and they are not labled as racist

we should have politicians adopt the same policy and have the balls to mention that unmentionable name

did a certain gentlemen not say that in 1934

and i am not talking of hague and duncan smith either

Can one of the Moderators not set up a separate forum for the small minded bigots? Please.
If I wanted to read the drivel spewed out by the right wing gutter press I would buy the Daily Mail.
This is a bit like us starting to play 3 word story in a serious thread about pension reform.

indigenous population of this country
This in an argument that the BNP and EDL always trot out but they never understand it. They beleive that it's the Anglo Saxons are indigenous, however, they were just a bunch of migrants that came after the Romans left. Whilst the romans were in the UK they used Germanic, Sarmatian and Armenian auxiliaries to defend the borders. incidentally Poland and Russia are countries that exist now where the Germanic and Sarmatian tribes originated. Also within the last decade a female skeleton was recovered in Yorkshire dating from Roman times and the DNA proved that she was of mixed Caucasian and African heritage.

There is also evidence dating from approximately 500BC of contact between what we know call the Middle East and tribes in Kent.

There is also a theory that postulates that the greatest English king, Arthur, was in fact a Sarmatian auxiliary that remained in the Uk after the Romans left. His name was Lucius Artorius Castus.

So perhaps the Poles, Italians, Turks, Africans and those from the Middle East actually have more claim to be indigenous to the UK than the Anglo Saxons.

Still a good bigot never let an uncomfortable truth get in the way of biased theory.

What is clear is that numbers are rising and is becoming unsustainable, there is a strain on services, all this cost money and must be paid for by taxes, it does not help that employers give jobs to those that are willing to do it for less in the black economy, which is untaxed and the money get sent out of this country.

There that wasn't hard wasn't it ? it is not racist to discuss immigration.

One of the problems the government has in their quest to reduce net migration is the fact that less people are emigrating.
One of the main planks of their policy was to hope people would keep leaving the UK in droves.
Emigration good. Immigration bad. Unfortunately that hasn't happened.
They have introduced measures to stop immigration from non EEA countries. This is pointless and has a damaging effect on the economy.
The only answer to immigration is to have a strong economy.
Blaming "the Poles" is as mindless (and ignorant) as blaming people in full time jobs.
After all, if we all jobshared and worked part time there wouldn't be any unemployment would there?

Many of the Brits are NOT emigrating because its no better elsewhere, I don't see the sense of forcing your own Citizens to leave the country and letting anybody else come in.

Immigration is bad if our economy, housing and services are in short supply and they are placing an overloaded demands on this, its all got to be paid for, tax receipts is down everybody is tightening belts.

I find that Poles, Czech, Slovaks do work hard is polite, respectful, I have met them, I don't blame them they are working here to send money back to their home country, I would do the same if I had to, there some scums however, not everybody is an angel and comes here with noble reasons, this still leaves less jobs for locals as unscrupulous employers will employ them on the black economy under minimum wage, no protection.

If we all job shared we will be on less money, it does not make business sense to pay full time wages to two people doing part time hours.

1) Don't blame the exploited. Blame the exploiter.
2) The greater the population, the greater the number of jobs. More production, more services are required. Shrink the population and the number of jobs shrink at the same time.
