Support for Egyptian postal strike

AN Islington trade unionist has hit the headlines in Egypt with a simple note of support to striking postal workers.

David Morrison, a representative for the Communications Workers Union (CWU) in Almeida Street, Islington, heard about his picketing Egyptian counterparts and sent a note of support.

He wrote: "I would like to send to you and all the Egyptian postal workers solidarity from Islington.

"We are in a fight with Royal Mail over are terms and conditions and you can be an inspiration to us all here in UK."

The note was translated into Arabic and posted on the internet, causing a sensation among chatroom bloggers.

One of the Egyptian bloggers, Sally Sami, lives in Gillespie Road, Highbury.

She said: "Dave's letter has given the workers movement in Egypt momentum by letting them know that people around the world are listening to them.

A spokesman for Mr Morrison said: "Dave is unable to give an interview as Royal Mail and CWU are in talks over industrial action. It may be deemed inappropriate.
