Delving through a mountain of 'lost' mail

POSTAL staff are pouring through a mountain of undelivered letters and packages found in a Kirkintilloch house.

The shocking discovery was made during a probe into missing mail.

The Herald understands that the haul included 10,000 items going back several years.

Now Kirkintilloch residents face an anxious wait to find out whether their missing letters and parcels are amongst the recovered items.

The crime was uncovered by postal chiefs on Tuesday, September 13.

Police raided a postman’s Kirkintilloch home two days later and found the hoard of mail.

A Royal Mail insider told the Herald that staff were “completely disgusted” by the alleged theft.

“There must be around 10,000 items,” said the source. “The earliest one we’ve found so far is dated April 2007. It’s disgraceful.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “An employee from Kirkintilloch Delivery Office has resigned following an investigation into the intentional delay of mail.

“The delayed and tampered mail will be delivered to customers with a covering letter by the end of next week explaining the delay and telling them who to contact should they require further information.

“We apologise to any customer whose mail has been affected by this incident.

“Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

“It is a criminal offence to tamper with or delay the delivery of mail and anyone caught doing so will face serious disciplinary measures and Royal Mail will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

“The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business and Royal Mail will not allow the actions of any individual to damage the good reputation of our thousands of hard-working postmen and women.”

I can appreciate that but we're all in the same boat . 99.9% of people wouldn't dream of doing it. We've been doing the p+l for a few months now and it puts you under pressure but the right channels must be used. It's no excuse

From a colleague who has seen it:

The volume of mail is jaw dropping.
We're talking yorkies and troughs of letters and packets.
Utterly mad.
