A young Staffordshire postman who dumped Christmas mail in a skip has been spared immediate custody.
More than 700 letters and packets were found in the recycling skip at Wildwood in Stafford by a council officer, who alerted the police, Stafford crown court heard.
Three days later, a further 67 packets were recovered from the same skip.
Royal Mail investigators discovered that the mail had come from the ‘walk’ of Andrew Follows, a recently appointed postman.
Mr John Dove, prosecuting, said Follows’s home was searched and a packet which had contained shoe stretchers was found in his bin.
Follows, aged 20, of Ampleforth Drive, Stafford, admitted theft of one packet and attempted criminal damage to a total of 778 packets belonging to the Royal Mail last December.
He was sentenced to eight months youth custody suspended for two years and ordered to do 200 hours unpaid community work and to pay £1,000 costs and £46 compensation.
But Judge Mark Eades told him the only thing that saved him from custody was that he didn’t destroy the letters and Royal Mail were able to send them on.
But Mr Paul Hiatt, defending, said that at the time he was having difficulties with the job and he didn’t know what he was doing.

All he had to do was buy bigger shoes ffs and he'd still be in a job.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Postman who dumped mail in skip spared jail
How are we ever going to put a stop to this type of behaviour, if the Courts refuse to give out any real punnishment?
We need a deterrant, to stop this tiny minority of criminals in our midst, continuing to interfere with the Mail! A suspended sentence, £46 compensation and a bit of Community Service, is hardly a deterrant, is it!?!?

Yes what we need is a decent wage to ensure we attract the best people.
We need fair and achievable workloads.
We need investment in training and ongoing supervision.
We need a management culture that actually cares about the staff in their care - instead of just ticking the box that the office is clear.
Perhaps then the courts would have less postmen in their docks.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I couldn't agree more Clash!
But as none of that is likley to happen any time soon (if at all), all we're left with is the deterrant (or lack thereof) provided by the Courts. And as it stands at the moment, the punnishment is little more than a slapped wrist, and being told not to be such a naughty boy/girl in the future!
