Royal Mail bosses assured Watford MP Richard Harrington that the town’s postal problems have been “completely rectified” during emergency talks yesterday.
The Conservative politician met with managers at the Ascot Road sorting depot to discuss recent postal chaos felt across Watford.
From as far back as June, residents and businesses have complained of severe delays in the postal service, which at its worst left some without deliveries for more than a month.
Royal Mail blamed the problems on a new delivery system introduced this summer, but told Watford’s parliamentary representative yesterday that the service was back to normal.
Speaking after yesterday’s meeting, Mr Harrington said: “They confirmed to me that the backlog created has been cleared and that the service has returned to normal.
“I will of course be monitoring this to make sure that this promise is upheld and that people are getting their post. If I find this not to be the case I will be in immediate contact with the Royal Mail to raise any of my constituents’ cases.”
Earlier this month, Mr Harrington called on Royal Mail to pay compensation to anyone affected by the postal problems.
He added: “I was told that there are practices in place to deal with complaints. However, given the number of people that have told me that they have received poor customer service and derisory offers of compensation, I have asked to be provided, by their head office, with exactly what they have in place to compensate my constituent s, by the end of the week.
“If I believe these proposals are unsatisfactory in light if the extent of this disruption, I will be escalating this matter and raising questions in Parliament on my behalf of my constituents.”
