POSTMAN QUITS OVER CLAIM HE HOARDED MAIL FOR YEARS

A POSTMAN was caught with as many as 10,000 undelivered letters and packages in his house, according to Royal Mail investigators.

David McLean is alleged to have kept bundles of letters, cards and parcels in his home in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, over a four-year period.

He has also been accused of tampering with cards and packages. Royal Mail officials said delayed mail would be forwarded to customers with notes of apology.

The accused postman has resigned while the investigators wade through piles of mail he is alleged to have left undelivered, a task likely to take three weeks.

It is claimed that non-delivery went undetected for years, despite customers complaining about missing items.

It is understood McLean came under suspicion only when delivery patterns were changed and mail began to go missing on a different route.

Royal Mail investigators and police went to McLean’s home on September 12, but were unable to gain access. However, the investigators did manage to get inside two days later.

A Royal Mail source said staff at the Kirkintilloch sorting office were “completely disgusted” and added: “There must be around 10,000 items. The earliest one we’ve found so far is dated April 2007. It’s disgraceful.”

The man at the centre of the allegations declined to comment yesterday.

Royal Mail said its own independent legal team, which reports directly to the procurator fiscal with any cases, was conducting an investigation. They would pass on a report to the procurator fiscal in Glasgow.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman confirmed an employee from the Kirkintilloch office had resigned following an investigation into “intentional delay of mail”.
She added: “We apologise to any customer whose mail has been affected by this incident.

“Delayed and tampered mail will be delivered to customers with a covering letter by the end of next week explaining the delay and telling them who to contact should they require further information.”

I know it is unfashionable to say it but apparently Kirkintilloch's revision is working.
Unless they are all taking home the undelivered mail?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
