A BOOTLE Post Office attacked by rioters with a JCB has reopened.

The digger was taken from a housing development when a gang of up to 30 rioters stormed Watts Lane Post Office, in Bootle, in August.

Staff today spoke of their joy that the post office is back in business.

Postmistress Irene Bethell said: “The situation was so bad for some of our customers they had to travel far distances to use different post offices in the area. It even meant a taxi ride for some of them – especially our older customers.”

The cost of repairs is thought to be around £40,000.

The Post Office opened last Tuesday, but a cash machine was installed yesterday.

Ms Bethell added: “Since we have been back, the staff have been inundated with welcome home cards, biscuits, sweets and chocolates.

“The community really have made us feel welcome and we appreciate that very much.”
