Police have praised the courage of have-a-go heroes who disarmed a gunman as he escaped from a robbery.

The masked man was dragged from his bike following a raid at Heaton Moor Post Office, in Stockport, on Friday (September 9) at 10am.

He was was riding down nearby Lea Road when a 53-year-old man pulled him to the floor. Then with the help of other members of the public, the gunman was detained until police arrived to make an arrest.

Detective Inspector Mike Fenton, from Stockport CID, said: "While we do not encourage members of the public to put themselves at risk in these circumstances, I have personally spoken to and thanked one of the witnesses who detained the offender.

"They all acted extremely bravely, giving no thought to their own safety, to detain an armed and clearly dangerous male.

"I cannot praise them enough for their intervention today in what must have been terrifying circumstances for all of them as well as for the staff at the Post Office.

"They leapt into action dragging the male off his bike, disarming him before he could use his gun. This shows how criminals underestimate the law abiding people of Greater Manchester at their peril."

Staff at the Post Office, on Heaton Moor Road, were threatened with the handgun before the robber made off with a substantial amount of cash.

No one was injured in the incident but police say staff and customers were left shocked.

As of Friday afternoon the suspect remains in custody for questioning
