Reassurance over closure of Droitwich mail delivery office

SPA residents may still be able to pick up their post from a town address even if Droitwich’s Royal Mail delivery office is closed.

Droitwich’s MP, Peter Luff believes he has won a reassurance that, if Royal Mail bosses go ahead with the closure of the facility, residents will still be able to collect their post and packages locally.

The site, based at The Furlongs, Berry Hill Industrial Estate, will be shut if proposals to move the town operation to Worcester Mail Centre are given the go-ahead under cost-cutting measures.

Staff members at Droitwich, believed to number around 40, are all expected to be given the chance to relocate to Worcester Mail Centre should the closure happen.

However, Mr Luff has moved to get reassurances that something will be done to stop residents being badly hit by the change.

He said: “I have now had a specific written assurance from Royal Mail that if someone is out and a card is left asking them to collect their bulky or recorded delivery post, they won’t have to go all the way to Worcester.

“I welcome this, but I still worry about the efficiency of moving Droitwich’s delivery arrangements to Worcester.”

In a letter to the MP, Paul Jobling, regional operations director for Royal Mail says that, if the move goes ahead, “Planning will look to secure a facility that will enable customers to collect mail locally on the occasions when we have not been able to deliver first time and have left a card. The preferred option for this will be to use existing facilities in the area provided by Post Office Ltd.”

Peter added: “This may even mean a better service for Droitwich people if the three post offices in the town are used as collection points.”

Although Royal Mail has reached the point of making formal proposals, no final decision has been made.
